Description About the Author

This handsome book, with nearly 80 color photos, is the complete story of the discovery of 128 unbound original Cooper Square Gutenberg Bibles and the decision to bind these massive volumes in a style reminiscent of the 15th century.

In the 1450s, the Gutenberg Bible was the first major book to be printed with movable type, thus
marking the beginning of the age of the printed book in the West.
For its 500th anniversary, Cooper Square Publishers set out to recreate the famous Bible. More than 50 years later, 128 unbound original Cooper Square Gutenberg Bibles were discovered by Pageant Books and Bookbinders Workshop, who then made the decision to bind these massive volumes with an authentic 15th century-style binding.

The Lost Gutenbergs takes the reader through the process of recreating these beautiful masterpieces with concise photographs and explanations.

"To attempt this undertaking is really a remarkable achievement in this day and age. Seeing the finished product is very impressive, and this book will be important reading for any aspiring binder or conservator who may be faced with repairing or restoring an original Gutenberg in the years ahead. A bookbinding tour de force." [Don Etherington, President, Etherington Conservation Services]
